Why a group?

A lot of what hurts us happened in relationship: in families, in churches, in communities that were supposed to be safe. So it makes sense that some of the deepest healing happens in relationship too.

In a group, you sit with a handful of people who know something of what you've carried. At first you might just listen. Then someone says the thing you've never said out loud, and you realize you aren't the only one. That moment, what group therapists call universality, can loosen years of shame in a single evening.

Over time, a group becomes a small world where you can practice something new: speaking up, setting a boundary, receiving care, offering it. You get to see how you show up with others, gently and in real time, with a therapist holding the space. And you get to be, for someone else, the hope you once needed.

Group therapy is a highly effective form of psychotherapy… at least equal to individual psychotherapy in its power to provide meaningful benefit.

Irvin D. Yalom, MD · The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy

What happens in a group

A small circle, held with care.

  • The same few faces, week after week.

A small, closed group with a trained therapist, so trust has time to grow.

  • Listening counts, too.

You're never asked to share before you're ready. Many people spend the first weeks simply taking it in.

  • What's said here stays here.

Clear group agreements protect everyone's privacy and keep the space safe for honesty.

Is a group a fit?

Maybe this sounds like you.

A group may help if...

  • You've felt alone in what you've been through.
  • A church, family, or community hurt you, and belonging feels risky now.
  • You want to practice speaking up and being seen, with support.
  • You're in individual therapy and want something alongside it.
  • You're curious what healing with others might feel like.

Individual work might come first if...

  • You're in immediate danger or crisis right now (please call or text 988, or 911).
  • You need more one-on-one attention to feel steady right now.
  • You're hoping to process a specific trauma in depth; individual therapy or an intensive may fit better.

Nervous about groups? Most people are at first. That's worth talking about in your consultation.

In individual therapy, the relationship is with your therapist. In a group, it's with each other too. You get support from people who understand, and a place to practice new ways of relating in real time. Many people find the two work beautifully together.

Our groups meet online, for adults living in Florida, Missouri, and Colorado. That makes it possible to gather people who might never find each other locally.
